How Different Generations Engage with Gaming

December 10, 2022

Gaming has long since left the realm of being something only young men enjoy. It has expanded across all people, no matter their age, gender, or background. Nowadays, so many different types of people are happy to find the time to sit and enjoy their favorite games.

Whether it be the brand-new Call of Duty or an online casino, gaming has no age limit anymore. Here is how different generations engage with gaming.

Who games the most?

When it comes to the most passionate and active gamers, the age range is actually spread a little wider than you might think. While younger people make up a large proportion, there’s also a very big group of 25-40-year-olds who still play video games regularly.

This is due to these players growing up during the gaming revolution, where new consoles were being released all the time, and there was a regular influx of new titles. These people started playing when they were younger and have simply continued to do so.

Mobile gaming

One of the biggest gaming developments to have impacted gamers and how the game is the advent of mobile gaming. Considering that smartphones are very accessible nowadays, more and more people are choosing to game on them too.

This is especially true for older generations who don’t buy gaming PCs or consoles, and while they may not all play AAA mobile games, they do spend many hours playing games such as Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and Clash of Clans.

Hardcore vs. casual gamers

There does seem to be a clear split between the generations when it comes to hardcore players and casual players. Hardcore players are those that play for multiple hours every day, and casual players are those who like to play a little bit when they have the time.

Younger generations tend to make gaming more of a hobby that they commit more of their time, while older generations play for much shorter periods and fairly irregularly.

Twitch & streaming

Streaming has also become an incredibly popular way to play and enjoy games. Again, the age groups vary quite a lot, with many older people choosing to stream the games they play.

On the other hand, younger generations tend to not only stream the games they play but also spend a lot of time watching their favorite streamers.

More older people are gaming

As already mentioned, there has been a massive increase in gaming among older generations. The prevalence of smartphones is one aspect of this shift, but the type of games available has also made gaming more appealing.

There are so many games in the brain-teaser and strategy genres that are easy to understand and play and that don’t require you to spend hours concentrating on the same thing.

Single-player vs. multiplayer

There is a distinct split between which generations play single-player games and which generations play multiplayer. Older generations gravitate towards single-player games as they often don’t feel the need to play a game that includes competitiveness and socializing.

On the other hand, younger players are more competitive and enjoy the feeling of beating other players. The social aspect is also essential; playing with your friends or making new friends is all part of the experience.

Genre choices

As already mentioned, older generations tend to play games that are generally more calming and don’t require constant attention and a lot of time. This is why titles such as Stardew Valley and Minecraft are more appealing, as well as strategy games such as Age of Empires and Cities: Skylines.

Younger generations prefer the excitement of larger multiplayer games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and League of Legends. The competitive factor is usually the clincher when it comes to which games younger players choose to buy and play regularly.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality has already set the stage to be a gaming space where both young and old generations alike come together to play games. The environment allows for multiple skill levels, the option to play single-player or multiplayer, and the socializing aspect.

The wide variety of games and experiences appeals to almost every type and age of a gamer, making it the best place for every kind of person to have a good time together.
