A 7-year study of populations from eastern and western Finland was undertaken to determine whether persons with diabetes who had not experienced an MI should be treated as aggressively for cardiovascular risk factors as those who had a previous MI.
The 7-year MI incidence rates for subjects without diabetes and with and… (more) without previous MI at baseline were 19% and 4%, respectively (P<0.001).
For subjects with diabetes and with and without previous MI at baseline, the 7-year MI incidence rates were 45% and 20%, respectively.
The data suggest that patients with diabetes and without previous MI have as high a risk of MI as persons without diabetes and with a previous MI, and that the cardiovascular risk factors of both groups should be treated equally aggressively.
